Jat Fliht Academy Vršac
History

The first flight on the slopes of Vršac Mt. was performed by pilot-engineer Aurel Vlaiku on 11th August 1912 (see photo on the left). The starting year of aeronautical tradition was 1925. when aeronautical club "Naša Krila" ("Our Wings") was founded. A study was made about the advantages of this region for development of gliding sport, and this had initiated the investors to build the first hangar in 1934.

After the World War II the intensive training of glider pilots continued. The group "Deveti" ("Ninth") opened a gliding school. They were flying on the gliders that they themselves designed and built. During these years, total flying hours per year done here in Vršac were greater than in all other Yugoslav centers altogether.

In fact, the Headquarters of Airforce declared Vršac to be the Centre for Glider Pilot Training. In 1947, the Vršac Gliding Centre was handed to Civil Aviation Authorities of Yugoslavia.

In 1954, Vršac becomes official State Aeronautical Centre. Glider pilots were now joined by parachuters, airplane pilots and aircraft-model makers. Vršac was recruitment centre for recreational aeronautics until 1972. Flyers from this centre took place in many world championships and brought many medals and records.

In 1972, Vršac was hosting the XIII World Championship in Gliding!

Since 1972, this centre is a part of JAT - Yugoslav Airlines, becoming JAT Airways recently. The new and most important page of history has been opened. Since that time this institution has been specialized for training future Airline Transport Pilots. In the honour of all those enthusiasts who devoted themselves to development of this institution, and for all those that are doing this today, Jat Airways Flight Academy each year organizes "Vršac Airshow".
